AMP Lab at SRP 2022

Members of the AMP Lab recently travelled to Philadelphia, PA for the 2022 Society for Research in Psychopathology conference. Fifth year PhD student Jessica Mow presented a poster, "Defeatist beliefs, psychopathology risk, and subjective and objective indicators of motivation and effort".  Second year PhD student Renata Botello presented a poster "Social adversity and loneliness in the daily lives of young adults and people with serious mental illness". Former AMP Lab PhD student Samuel Abplanalp presented a symposium, "A network approach to positive symptoms, negative symptoms, and role functioning: How permeable are the boundaries?" . Congratulations to all of our presenters!

The AMP lab recently published a study examining differences in people with and without schizophrenia on social qualities that influence emotion in daily life using ecological momentary assessment. The article is open-access online at PLOS One.

This past week, the 31st Association for Psychological Science conference was held in Washington, D.C. Emma Weizenbaum received the Society for a Science of Clinical Psychology (SSCP) Student Poster Competition award for her work on mobile assessment of cognition. Great job Emma!

This past week, members of the AMP Lab attended the annual Society for Research in Psychopathology conference in Indianapolis.  Several members, including Jasmine Mote, Sam Abplanalp, Mariah Warren, and Anne Uhlman, presented posters reflecting their respective work in the lab.  Dr. Fulford gave a talk on work with collaborator Dr. David Gard using mobile phone-based sensors to characterize social isolation and loneliness in people with schizophrenia.  Myriad tacos were consumed.  Go team!  


Digital Health Initiative grant funded by BU's Hariri Institute and Institute for Health Systems Innovation and Policy

Emma Weizenbaum and Dr. Fulford, along with collaborators Drs. Alice Cronin-Golomb and Vijaya Kolachalama, were recently awarded a Digital Health Initiative (DHI) grant to develop individualized computational models of cognitive performance across real-life contexts using mobile phone-based assessments. The goal of the project is to study fluctuation in cognition across a number of contexts (e.g., location and social environment) and internal states (e.g., mood, alertness, motivation) to create a predictive road-map for precise and personalized interventions.

Symposium on Mobile Technologies at APS!
5/26/17

At this year's Association for Psychological Science (APS) meeting, Dr. Fulford chaired a symposium on the use of sensing technologies as assessment and intervention tools in mental illness.  Dr. Fulford kicked of the set of talks with a presentation on the use of mobile phone-based sensors to detect social isolation in schizophrenia.  Dr. Ipsit Vahia from McLean/Harvard Medical School spoke about the use of these technologies to aid in identifying and intervening in dementia.  Dr. Anda Gershon from Stanford Psychiatry discussed the use of actigraphy to detect depression in people with bipolar disorder.  Finally, Dr. John Torous from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center/Harvard Medical School discussed the use of various sensing technologies to predict symptom relapse in serious mental illness.  Dr. Belinda Borrelli from Boston University Medical Campus served as discussant.

Mobile intervention grant funded by National Institutes of Health (NIH)

Dr. Fulford was recently awarded a grant from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) to develop a mobile phone-based application to support social motivation and social skills in individuals with schizophrenia.   The project is in collaboration with Dr. David Gard at San Francisco State University and Dr. Kim Mueser at Boston University.  The primary focus will be to develop social goal support in the daily lives of people with serious mental illness.

Dudley Allen Sargent grant funded
5/25/16

Dr. Fulford was recently awarded a grant from the Dudley Allen Sargent Research Fund to conduct an evaluation of an internet-based cognitive-behavioral therapy program to help people cope with symptoms of paranoia.  The evaluation will take place in Boston area community clinics.  The primary focus will be to understand the potential benefits of this approach, particularly in improving social functioning for people with serious mental illness.

AMP Lab collaborator Dr. Joshua Woolley's pilot study examining the tolerability and potential efficacy of oxytocin in opioid-dependent patients was recently published in Psychopharmacology​.
